Playing with toys appropriately, especially pretend type toys can be difficult for kids with ASD. However, it is a skill that can be taught. How old is your daughter, and what are her current abilities in this area?
It is very helpful when working on teaching independent play to take baby steps. Create tasks that are very easy to complete, like placing just the last piece of a puzzle in, and slowly increase. Keep the same thing in mind for the amount of time expected. Figure out how long she is able to sit and complete an activity, and start below that, slowly increasing the time. Hope this helps.
My daughter was recently diagnosed with Autism. It has always been a challenge for her to play independently and it has become increasingly difficult in the past few months. Do you have any suggestions as to what to do? Help!
