Constantly after his younger brother

5550 in reply to 5550#1 posted Feb 2

The fightening in my house has got stop!  I have two boys -  both who seem to want to kill each other.  We have tried everything from spanking, to taking away toys.  I dont feel comfortable spanking nor does my husband.  We have nothing left to take away and I feel like my house is turning into one of the homes shown on supernanny.  The younger one is not as bad as the older one.  Everything we tell him to do - he does the opposite especially when it comes to his brother.  I feel like my parenting is failing. I want to know how to stop their sibling battles.

It can be incredibly tough to deal with sibling battles as they usually get pretty good at playing off one another - This can make it very stressful as although they may get a break you never do.  The one thing I noticed in your posting was that you feel you have "bankrupt" them with nothing left to take away.  Instead of taking things away, try introducing a system of reinforcement in which they earn access to items for displaying desired behavior. This way they earn that you are only going to attend to behavior that is appropriate, such as taking turns, asking for your attention appropriately, waiting for your attention, etc.  They will test you for a while, but make it clearn you will only attend to their good behavior.

Lets try to make boys busy...You may not avoid battles completley but for sure it can be some idea how to diminish amount of battles. I would try to find some classes for them al least twice a week or playdates( separetly). It may want them to talk abot that when they are at home..instead of fighting....
