Problem with my 10yr old

5731 in reply to 5731#1 posted Feb 10
I searched your posts but could not find any information on misbehavior. My daughter who up until now has always been a 'good kid' has recently been acting up. She will out right defy any request that I ask and goes out of her way to not do what I ask. Punishing her has not seemed to help as she ends up defying my punishment as well. I would like an opinion on what could be done as I feel like this behavior is getting out of control and I want to stop it now. She has not been tested for any issues etc, however she is very introverted especially in the school setting.

Re: problem with my 10year old

It is always scary when our child's behavior takes a sudden turn for the worst. My advice would be to evaluate any changes in routines, environment, friends etc. and also how people are responding to her behavior, which can definately be reinforcing enough to keep it going. I would rule out the basics. This could be as simple as " puberty" but if there are indications of struggling in social emotional areas as well as change in behavior that interferes with her day to day living/learning it would be wise to start discussing the behavior changes with her pediatrician.

Thanks. We are taking her to be evaluated by her physician and to look at all the options. I appreciate all the information that you have given me.
