Auditory Tapes for Attention

Many parents wonder what they can do to help their child who has difficulty following auditory instructions given in class.  These students may appear forgetful, unable to remember steps of the tasks clearly explained.

Our Expert Tip: Sharpen your child’s focused attention and listening skills by listening to audio books together. Begin by playing a selection and making note of the amount of time that your child appears to be listening attentively. The goal will be to build this interval over time with daily listening. Start by listening to the tape together and then ask your child open-ended questions about the story.  Allow them to enjoy where their train of thought may take them. Don’t focus too heavily on your child’s ability to regurgitate events in the story. The goal is to build listening and attending skills through enjoyment. If they aren’t enjoying the type of attention that follows demonstrated listening, they’re not likely to want to repeat the experience. Make your listening a special time, whether in the car or at home.
