Focus On Work Habits And Not The Grades

Acceptable grades typically follow acceptable study habits. By focusing on building a solid work ethic, your child will feel more in control and more motivated to work on things they have the power to change.
Our Expert Tip:
Keep your child motivated by positively reinforcing good work habits, instead of focusing on the grade received. Focusing on grade performance can leave your child frustrated about something out of their control. Start by...
- Teaching your child what having “good study habits” means to you; Write a social story that describes these habits.
- Teaching them how to plan, organize and incorporate studying into their everyday routine.
- Paying positive attention to the efforts they make at acquiring these skills.
- Letting your child know how impressed you are that he or she keeps their school materials so organized.
- Telling him or her how proud you are to see them beginning a project a week in advance.
- Being patient, positive, and supportive as they work on their study habits.
