Getting The Most Out Of Summer School

Updated on Tuesday, July 25, 2006 |

Summertime and vacation breaks from school are excellent opportunities to target the behaviors associated with your child's ADHD.  Although most are thrilled with the idea of a break from teachers, tutors, and doctors - it is important to remember that these learning challanges need to consistantly be addressed.

Our Expert Tip:

Establish and maintain routine during the summer months.  Prepare your child for next school year with “summer school” at home. Set up a summer workstation where your child will spend a fixed amount of time daily working on educational tasks before beginning a day of summer fun. Alternate difficult tasks with easier ones to manage your child’s frustration. Use summer reading, workbooks or other educational materials to encourage a daily work ethic, while rotating in fun experiments and projects. The school routine will be less of a shock if your child has “practiced” expected school behavior and work habits all summer long.
