Going To The Toilet In Public Places

One of the most difficult issues is planning for outings when toilet training.  Long lines, unsanitary conditions, and unfamiliar environments can quickly make the experience an unpleasant and unsuccessful one.   It is important to adequately plan for toileting in public places.

Our Expert Tip: You want the child to go before they have to go.  Before heading out the door always have the child sit on the potty and "try" to use the bathroom.  If you ask them "Do you have to go?"  The likelihood of them saying yes is pretty slim.  In addition, make sure you leave the house with a change of cloths and plenty of wipes should there be an accident.  Immediately upon arriving at your destination search out the nearest bathroom.  Have your child check it out and answer any questions they may have.  Point out the difference between their bathroom at home and the public restrooms.  If you are an hour into your trip and there is no sign of the child initiating use the potty, take a short break to have them try.  If you are a dad with a girl who has to go and there are no single units, either take her into the ladies room, have another woman take her in and wait outside the door, or clear out the men's room.  Regardless, you have to be flexible and willing to accommodate your child's needs during the training time.
