How To Only Ask Once
Updated on Sunday, August 13, 2006 |
By Daniela TricocheFeel as though your children or even your partner is tuning you out? Well, they probably are if you have fallen ill with the broken record syndrome.
Our Expert Tip:
“Only Ask Once.” If your children are used to your asking four, five, or fifty times before you finally lay down the law, then the likelihood of them listening to you on the first request is pretty slim. Techniques to only having to ask once:
- Give a warning. Let the listener know you will need to request something of them in “X” time.
- Before asking, terminate all preferred activities such as television or play station.
- Gain the listeners full attention with eye contact.
- Outline consequences when placing the demand. For example, “I am only going to ask you once to pick up your soccer shoes. If I have to ask twice, you will not play in tomorrow’s game.”
