How to Use My Dinner Menu

Providing choice in foods can be a very powerful motivator for the picky eater. By creating a weekly "Dinner Menu" parents can introduce new foods to the child's repetoire while still allowing the child to have say in their dinner selection. The Dinner Menu rule is that the child can eat their chosen (food, ice cream, cake, french fries, etc) but only if they eat a few bites of the foods Mommy and Daddy chose first. This is known as the Pre-Mak principle; the child must do something non-preferred to gain access to something preferred. The social story below was written by one of our staff to introduce the "Dinner Menu" to the child. Be sure to involve the child in the creation of the Dinner Menu, from food selection to the menu's appearance.
Social Story to Introduce the Dinner Menu
Sara has a new dinner menu.
The menu is a sheet of paper that tells Sara what is for dinner each day.
The menu will have something different listed on it each day.
It is important that Sara eat different foods so that their bodies can be healthy.
There will be a food that Mommy and Daddy have chosen and a food that Sara has chosen.
Sara has to eat Mommy and Daddy's food before she can eat hers.
When Sara eats different foods it makes her body feel good.
Eating different foods makes you a Superstar!
