Improving Your Child's Social Skills

Assisting a student to prepare for a social situation will greatly enhance their understanding of what will be expected of them.  Imagine walking into a room where you are expected to give a speech, but you have nothing prepared.  Those are the same feelings many experience with what we think are routine day to day situations.  Regardless of developmental level, answering questions prior to the event through rehearsals, social stories, and discussion will greatly enhance the ease in which the student interacts with others.

Our Expert Tip:

Rehearsals can take the form of role plays, puppet shows, stories, art projects, and/or discussions.  Regardless of the form we advise that you focus on addressing the following questions with the student: What to do when you arrive?  What will the others at the event be doing?  What are you expected to bring?  How do you find out this information? What if you don’t want to do an activity?  What are your choices?  Who do you go to if you have a problem/question?  What are the cues it is time to leave?
