Increasing Your Child's Willingness To Be Toilet Trained

Do you feel like you are going to spend the next century by the toilet coaching your child to please "go pee-pee in the potty!"  This can be the result of a child's lack of motivation or interest in becoming an independent toileter. What many parents don't realize is that their pushing may actually be decreasing their child's interest in going alone.  Some children may respond to the increase attention (even negative attention) with a decrease in motivation. Why would they need to show initiative if their lack of motivation is getting them plenty of attention?

Our Expert Tip:

Remain patient.  To increase the child's independence make sure that schedules and prompts are faded as quickly as possible to decease resistance and prompt dependence.  In other words, quickly fade yourself from sitting by the potty to standing by the door and finally down the hall.  Also, with each day of success increase the length of the training schedule.  With this should come an increase the number of dry self checks done on a daily basis.  If all your reinforcers/rewards seem to have failed, try to focus on making it an expected rule of being a "big boy or girl."  Remember, that the more relaxed you remain the more your children will be as well.
