Butterfly Effects and Temple Judea Launch The Sail Program
Temple Judea Preschool, in partnership with Butterfly Effects, has launched ‘The Sail Program’ in Ft Myers.
The program was developed to meet the unique needs of those students with special learning and social-emotional needs. “Our program provides the student with the best of both worlds, the opportunity to learn new skills and address behavioral concerns in a small (2:1 student teacher ratio) classroom and then have that student use those newly acquired skills in a mainstream classroom”, explains Joann Goldman, the program director.
“Our programs on the East Coast have been very successful, helping many students transition to a regular classroom. This program is the first of its kind in the Ft Myers area and we are excited to be a part of it,” says Charlotte Fudge, Clinical Director for Butterfly Effects.
Jason and Ronnit, whose son attended the Liv Luv program at the West Palm JCC from December 2007 through February 2008 had this to say about the program, “What a difference three months can make! The one-on-one attention and supervision by a well-trained group of teachers helped him tremendously. The staff immediately recognized his need for help with social skills, and they began teaching him to interact and communicate appropriately with others. His speech and communication drastically improved within weeks, which helped with his behavioral problems. They began work almost immediately on integrating him into a mainstream classroom, where he is now flourishing.”
About the Sail Program
Temple Judea created the SAIL Program in partnership with Butterfly Effects to meet the unique needs of students with special learning and social-emotional needs. The Program provides the student with the best of both worlds. It gives them the opportunity to learn new skills and address behavioral concerns in an intense small classroom setting while maintaining exposure to daily activities in the mainstream classroom for generalization of learned skills. This provides an opportunity for Program staff to assess student readiness for the mainstream environment on a daily basis. Communication, social/emotional, and learning readiness skills are taught through a variety of methodologies founded in the principals of Applied Behavioral Analysis, Occupational Therapy, and Speech and Language Pathology.
What makes the SAIL Program unique?
- The inclusion program occurs in a small classroom setting within a mainstream school.? Enrollment is based on a 5 session system verses yearly tuition contract to continually assess the student’s need for program placement.
- The program maintains a maximum of 1:2, teacher to student ratio at all times to allow for intensive instruction and program individualization.
- Each students program is overseen by a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst™ who prepares individualized education and intervention plans to address each child’s needs.
- Students receive group consults by Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists to address additional language, pragmatic, motor, and sensory processing concerns.
- The Butterfly Effects Web based interactive platform allows parents to monitor and participate in the child’s progress through daily progress reports and classroom videos.
- Program updates are made weekly and transition meetings held monthly with caregivers and the SAIL Program team to assess student readiness for the mainstream classroom.
How does the SAIL Program work?
Each student’s program is individualized in both their goals and implementation. Depending on the level learner or complexity of skill being taught, goals may first be addressed in a therapeutic, 1:1 or 1:2 setting. Once data demonstrates the skill is mastered there, teachers will then shift their focus to generalizing it through instruction in the mainstream setting. Our students’ rate of success is made possible by the daily data collection guiding instructional decision making, generalization of skills through inclusion activities, and a multi-disciplinary team approach to treatment. This ensures that no time is wasted and each student reaches his or her fullest potential as quickly as possible.
Who is the SAIL Program for?
Students accepted into the program are ages 2 to 6 years and are currently unable to maintain in a mainstream classroom setting without support. Students typically display one/more of the following concerns: high frequency and/or intensity problematic behavior/s, social skills deficits, and/or communication/language delays.
How are parents involved in the SAIL Program?
The SAIL Program is different from other programs in that we put the tools for change in the parent’s hands. We require that parents come to us with the desire to implement change into their own homes as well as a commitment to see it through. In addition to daily participation through the interactive platform, caregivers are required to come and participate in program instruction to ensure that skills are being generalized outside of the school environment.
