Hi - I am new to this but we are struggling with our 3 1/2 year old son. He was born very preaturely at 27 weeks weighing 1 pound 14 ounces. He was in the hospital for 3 1/2 months. About 1 1/2 years ago, we put him in daycare so that he can be around children his own age vs. my husband, my parents and myself. The only problem that my son had was socialization issues with children his own age and we are receiving help from our county's early intervention group and now the intermediate agency. Other than these few minor issues there is nothing else wrong medically with our son. He is a perfectly healthy 3 1/2 year old with the exception of asthma.

We have been trying to potty train him for the longest time and nothing is working. We have tried rewards, presents, shopping trips, etc with encouraging him to go on the potty and nothing seems to work. Daycare has also been working with him on this and still it is not working. We have discussed this with his teachers, peditrician, people helping us with his socializaiton issues, etc and have incorporated everything that we have learned into the routine of trying to get him potty trained. He stays dry through the night, stays dry longer than 3 hours during the day, knows when he needs to go pee and poop (runs and hides) so all the signs are there that he is ready (has been for at least 1 year) but nothing is working. I have brought up this up with everyone and mentioned the fact that he was a premie and everyone has told me that is not the issue - they keep on falling back that he is a boy and it will come. He knows when he needs to go he actually tells us when he is done - we catch him in the act and either run him to the potty or bring the potty to him. We have tried taking him out buying him big boy pants, buying a doll he can teach to go potty (he was more fascinated with the doll peeing in the potty than teaching it), etc. Since he has been in daycare everyone from his original class has moved up in class and it is only my son and one other boy who is older than him who isn't potty trained. He towers over everyone in his class and tells us everyday how he doesn't like anyone in his class so as you can see we are at the end of our rope and are really trying to get him trained so he can move up and be in the bigger classroom, learn more and even get him started in pre-school. Even cold turkey hasn't worked (putting him in big boy pants and letting him pee or poop) this has been tried on and off but he holds himself all day long and pees when he is put in a pullup.

Can anyone help us with this - is there something we are doing wrong or anything else we should be trying to do?

Stuck - need help

My son is over 3 years now, and we are just having some potty training success. For a long time he would scream if we tried to get him to sit on the potty. We tried that naked potty training thing, and immediately had no accidents - as long as he is naked. If he has on a diaper, underwear, pants, pull up, etc - he just goes in it and then says PEE! and points. He does not care at all that he has wet his diaper. We have tried incentives like stickers, and even m and m candies, though we cant do the candies anymore as we are trying a gfcf diet with him. He understands the concept perfectly if he is naked, and knows how to take his pull up off - but I need him to learn to have clothes on when he isnt using the potty! He is in a PLACE program with the public school, and they are yet to ever get him to go on the potty. He will ask to go, but not have to, or tell them after he has already went - same thing he does at home unless he is naked. I don't know what else to do! Advice is appreciated...
Going Overboard?

So this is the first time I've ever heard of this...

Alarm Systems in the underwear! It is the new "gold standard" for potty training. Alarms include a battery-powered sensor worn inside underwear. If the sensor becomes wet, it triggers an alarm and wakes the child, so that he or she will go to the bathroom. These fancy-schmancy underwear go for $50-$100.

Has anyone tried, or heard of, these things? I would be afraid of electroshock!

worn out!!

My son will be four next month and has SI and language disorder. He is my third child , my other two children were potty trained before age three. I realize he has special needs but I am beyond confused as how to get him fully potty trained! He has been fully pee trained for about 4 1/2 months. I threw ALL diapers away after about two weeks of him being pee trained and he has been in underwear even at night. He refuses to sit on potty to poop and he also poops in his underwear MANY times a day. I call it micro-pooping!

I am so tired of cleaning poop out of underwear. I have tried to offer reward , done social stories , he is encouraged for sitting and peeing. I even tried to make him clean his own undies but it did not seem to bother him at all.

Any suggestions???

thanks so much

A friend of mine has a child with SI. He started potty training a few months ago, he is now "fully" potty trained in trems of "pee-pee" (except while he is sleeping). However, he is absolutely petrified of pooping in the toilet. His mom knows when he has to go, so she takes him to the potty, but the kid can hold it in for hours. A few times, when mommy noticed that he REALLY had to go, she tried taking him to the bathroom, but the kid "freaked out"!!!! he now only goes poopy at night, when he gets his diapers, but he stills "manipulates" mommy by saying "I have to go poop" (because he knows that mommy will sit with him on the potty for hours, reading books).

They have tried a token reward system, great R+, picture schedules, social stories, every potty training book on earth...and it still hasn't worked...

I adviced my friend to get rid of the diapers, even if he has accidents. But she said that he is not fully potty trained, so he will wake up wet in the mornings. She is going to start by getting rid of diapers during naps, and then she will get rid of them entirely.

Any other advice?

Potty Training for child with autism

We have a daughter who has been diagnosed with autism. She is incredibly uncomfortable with going to the bathroom (even in her diapers) as we feel she is afraid of the sensation. We would love to be able to get her potty trained (she is now almost 3). She takes instruction well and can focus on a task, however she is deathly afraid of the toilet or any contraption that we present to her when we think that she wants to go potty. If anyone has some advice on this it would be appreciated.

POTTY TRAINING PROBLEM
