Our daughter has just been diagnosed with autism. She is only 22 months old. I have searched in a number of places but wanted to ask if anyone knew of some self help tests or books that they could recommend that would help me learn more about the diagnosis. Although I know that there are some inherent problems with our daughter, I always feel it is prudent to seek a second opinion and to determine for myself if it passes the 'does that make sense' test. Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you have to see a doctor in order to get a diagnosis for your daughter? Our son is only 14 months but our pediactrician feels that we should get him tested and that he cannot do that testing. He did not have anyone that he knew or felt comfortable with in referring. We are in the South Florida area. If you are in this area, do you have any recommendations?

Re: New Diagnosis/Books

Here are a few helpful resources that are a good start:
  1. Lynn M. Hamilton, Bernard Rimland. Facing Autism: Giving Parents Reasons for Hope and Guidance for Help
  2. A Work in Progress: Behavior Management Strategies & A Curriculum for Intensive Behavioral Treatment of Autism by Ron Leaf, John McEachin, Jaisom D. Harsh, Ronald Burton Leaf - Very good information and is good to use as a compliment to the Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills
  3. Sundberg, Mark, L., Ph.D. and Partington, James, W. Ph.D. Teaching Language to Children with Autism or Other Developmental Disabilities
  4. Partington, James, W. PhD., and Mark L. Sundberg, Mark, L. PhD. The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills (ABLLS)

"Let me hear your voice" by Catherine Maurice is also a good book for parents facing a new diagnosis. It is written from a mother's perspective.

Re:Testing

Try  FDLRS/ Child Find  for the initial global testing, the program for children under 3 is called Early Steps(may have a different name in some counties). This is the starting point where you can get an evaluation that covers speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy and behavior therapy. If your child indeed is at risk with significant delays they may provide services needed.

The Center for Autism and Related Disabilities(CARD) is also a great place to find resources and referrals.

 Hope this helps.
