The school says my child who has been diagnosed with ADHD needs medication in order to stay in his current classroom.  What should I do?

Treatment of ADHD with medication should not be vilified, for it has improved the lives of millions of children.  However, its results should also not be overrated.  Recent studies demonstrate that the most successful interventions are those that combine the use of medication with behavioral therapy in the treatment of ADHD.  Unfortunately, the “one size fits all model” in the school system, leaves many parents lost as to treatment for their child when they do not want to medicate.

At Butterfly Effects, we emphasize the importance of parents taking their child’s education into their own hands.  Start by organizing a team meeting with the school and really listening to their concerns.  Remember, that teachers want the best for their students, but often times are overwhelmed with the stress of limited resources.  So, do not get defensive.  Then take their concerns and put them into clear definitions.  The next step is to work to develop a team plan of action of that is feasible for all.
