When used alone, medication is a “quick fix” approach. It may treat the symptoms, but definitely does not cure the problem. Just because a teacher feels that a child’s attention span has increased with the medication use does not mean the child has the learned how to pay attention without the medication. Medication management alone leaves those struggling with ADHD dependent on their medication to manage basic day to day interactions. Although, others may perceive their behaviors as being under control, these ADHD patients often feel out of control, for they have not learned the necessary skills to cope with their disorder. Unfortunately, many educators feel their hands are tied under the current education system and parents feel pressured by outside influence to quickly fix the behavior not thinking of long term outcomes for the child.
Rather than bandaiding the solution, many are choosing to use professional behavior therapy such as Butterfly Effects Programs. These programs enable parents/educators to teach their children with ADHD the needed skills to make long term changes in their behavior. In addition, behavioral therapy prior to medication can assist in determining the need for medication as well as an appropriate dosage.
