Treatment Options

Updated on Friday, August 24, 2007
Although there is no cure for Autism, there are numerous treatment options that have effectively shown to reduce many of the behavioral and educational challenges associated with the disorder.  Currently, behavioral therapies, diet modification, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and medical interventions are being effectively being used worldwide to treat the disorder.  Even still, the lack of replicated research leaves many of the above interventions considered experimental by the medical community.

It is important to remember that individuals with autism are in fact individuals and requires unique treatment plan to meet their needs.  If you are a parent of a child with ASD, finding a treatment plan that works for your child can be incredibly frustrating.  You will find that many “experts” feel there way is the right and only way.  However, do not feel discouraged.  Just remember, that you know your child best.  Although there will always be setbacks, as long as your child is overcoming the challenges of his/her disability and gaining independence daily you can’t go wrong.

The most well researched therapies are those that involve Applied Behavior Analysis.  ABA has proven itself successful in teaching people with ASD of any age to succeed in the classroom environment, job setting, and in one’s family and wider community.  Social skills, communication, self-care, play, and reduction of  maladaptive behaviors are just a few of the many skill sets that can be taught through ABA.
