Treatment Options

Noncompliant behavior is most successfully treated with behavioral modification.  These techniques aim to not only decrease the problem behavior, but increase a more desirable one in its place.  For example, if the child’s behavior is determined to function for attention, analysts will devise a program in which the child no longer receives attention for the inappropriate behavior and is taught to seek it in a more appropriate manner.

The first step of the behavioral modification process is seeking the help of a professional to conduct a functional assessment of the behavior and skill level of the child.  The assessment process enables analysts to identify the function of the behavior and the environmental variables that may influence it.  The assessment will also address you child's learning history and preferences.  Based on this information, a program can be developed that address your specific behavioral concerns.
