Understanding

Updated on Friday, August 24, 2007

The first step is to understanding non-compliant/resistance behavior aka “NO!” is to address the behavior’s function.  Children engage in non-compliant behavior to:
1. escape a demand (“clean your room”)
2. gain access to a more preferred activity (“continue watching television”)
3. get attention (even if negative)
4. express frustration with a situation (communication deficit)
5. all of the above

The second step can be a bit more challenging for it involves investigating many different environmental variables that may influence the occurrence of the behavior.  The following are just a sample of variables that may influence the behavior: time of day, type of request, level of difficulty of task, who placed the demand, child’s ability to transition, level of communication, and their ability to identify feelings.  The great thing is that non-compliant behavior can easily be remedied once the events (antecedents and consequences) surrounding it are understood.
